Car makers have escalated their prices several times already this year owing to various reasons including new emission norms, and rising commodity prices including rubber and steel. Now they are giving less discount to customers once again during the festival season. In fact, they have cut festival discounts to the lowest in three years.

Hyundai is offering one of the lowest discounts owing to huge market demand. Hyundai Santro was discounted up to Rs. 50,000 in 2007, Rs. 40,000 in 2008 and Rs 30,000 in 2009. This year the discounts are expected to be again lower than previous years. “Where is the room for discounting when we are desperately trying all means to meet market demand,” Hyundai director sales Arvind Saxena had said on the launch of the new i10 hatchback.

“At a time when we are trying hard to meet the market demand, discounts don’t seem to be an viable option to boost sales,” said Mayank Pareek, managing executive officer (marketing & sales), Maruti Suzuki. Maruti Suzuki has a set of the most successful models in the country and is fighting hard to meet the market demands. It already has long waiting periods for at least 9 out of total 12 models in its portfolio.

Toyota is ready with its new hatchback and sedan Etios for the Indian market but it also has one of the most successful MPV models Innova in the market. It had increased the price of Innova up to Rs. 29,000 and is now offering up to Rs. 30,000 discount during the festive season.
