News has been doing rounds that Government of India has been working on chalking out new set of safety norms for cars in the country. The cars would require to undergo and clear mandatory side-impact tests and offset frontal crash. The norms would be set straight in a couple of months and is expected to be implemented in phases. Currently, National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP) has been working on chalking out a neat plan. An official stated, “Government is studying the crash-test norms and assessment programs from all major markets like Japan, Europe and the US to develop the most ideal mix for India. The detail protocol for safety-star rating in India is likely to be ready by mid 2014. All the cars currently sold may not meet the norms even after major changes are carried out. Especially the older ones may have to be phased out by manufacturers as the cost to adapt to new norms would be prohibitive and unviable.”

The law being strict on safety norms manufactures would have to invest more in making their cars more safe and stronger, this addition in cost would eventually be passed on the buyer lot in the country. The newer cars would possible require some major changes in the body design and strngthen the body cage and chassis. Features like ABS, EBD and Airbags may also be frequently used to gain an advantage on the safety star rating.
