Owing to alarming pollution levels in the national capital, the government has decided to roll out Bharat Stage VI fuels two years before schedule. As adapting to BS VI norms for cars will require considerable changes to the cars, an immediate switch will put manufacturers in a state of panic. In order to avoid the panic situation, the switch is effective from April 2018. The move could bring pressure on the industry to advance the introduction of such vehicles that are now scheduled for an April 2020 rollout in India.

The older cars which were adhering to the BS III and BS IV norms will have no problems using the new BS VI fuel. The government has asked oil manufacturing companies to study the feasibility of providing BS-VI fuels to the National Capital Region by April, 2019. The decision to roll out BS-VI instead of BS-V after BS-IV emission norms has been taken to meet global standards on carbon emission. While the auto industry agrees that this is a step in the right direction, they were not in a position to bring out the BS VI vehicles prior to 2020.
