The new BS-IV emission norms, which were implemented by the government in 13 major cities of the Indian auto market in April 2010, are now all set to be applied to 20 Indian cities from next month. It is to be mentioned here that 17 Indian cities have already been switched to these emission norms, and now the government is all set to add 3 more cities this league from 1st of March 2012. The three cities that will be added in the list of BS-IV emission category include Ankaleshwar in Gujarat, Hissar in Haryana and Bharatpur in Rajasthan.

The government of India aims to include as many as 50 major cities of the country in the BS –IV emission norms category by year 2015. The fuels (petrol and diesel) compatible with BS-IV emission norms contain lesser sulpher content as compared to the BS-III emission norms. The sulpher is a major air pollutant that causes intense pollution in the environment. At present, over 40 percent share of the Indian car market is accounted by the 17 cities that come under BS-IV category.

The 13 cities where the BS-IV emission norms were applied initially in Year 2010 include NCR (national capital region), Ahmedabad, Agra, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kanpur, Lucknow, Mumbai, Pune, Surat and Solapur.
