      BMW to roll-out new 1-Series hatchback in India by 2013

      BMW India, the largest luxury car maker in the Indian market, is gearing-up to roll-out the new 1 Series hatchback and a mini compact car in the country within a period of two years. The move has been taken in a bid to further enhance its India portfolio and compete more promptly with its rivals like Mercedes and Audi.

      Speaking to the reporters on Tuesday, BMW India President Andreas Schaaf said, "The Indian market is evolving fast and, as the leader of luxury cars, we are looking at our compact range of cars to meet varied preferences of customers." He added that the company is doing everything to stay ahead of the competition and drive into new segments that would keep the customers delighted.

      BMW’s closest competitor Mercedes Benz has already announced that it will roll out smaller luxury cars in the Indian market including the range of A-Class and B-Class by year 2013.

      In last fiscal, BMW India retained it top position in the Indian market by selling over 15,000 cars, followed by Mercedes Benz and Audi at 2nd and 3rd spots, respectively.

      In a recent statement give to ET, Mr. Schaaf said, "We will get as many products from our global lineup depending upon the local demand including the best of technology and new concepts developed by our parent company."
