The well appreciated German car maker, BMW, recently unveiled the Pininfarina Grand Lusso concept in Italy. Now, the automotive giant is gearing up to launch a mini Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV), based on its popular 1-Series model. BMW plans to launch the new model as a seven-seater and place it against the B-Class, which gives a tough competition to the 1-Series. It is speculated that the auto maker will globally introduce its 1-Series MPV by 2014.

The BMW Active Tourer Concept exhibited in 2012 Paris Motor Show and the new 1-Series MPV varies from each other on the basis of the stretched rear roof and longer rear doors. So, the new model can be rightfully called the 1-Series GT owing to its design and aesthetic. There is no news regarding when the new model will be launched; however, it is expected that the vehicle will come with the standard wheelbase, initially followed by a stretched variant scheduled for 2015.

This new model, 1-Series GT, is designed to accommodate seven adults comfortably and sports an extended rear overhang. It has a longer wheelbase than that of the Concept Active Hybrid showcased in 2012, which is a compact 5 seater model. The changes between both GT models are the larger rear doors, taller roof and upright design of the tailgate in the 1-Series GT.

It is speculated that the new 1-Series MPV will be served by either new generation 1.5 litre petrol or diesel powertrain, with three cylinders. This drivetrain has been already tested on the outgoing hatchback of the 1-Series. However, despite sharing the moniker with the 1-Series, the new MPV will not come equipped with Rear Wheel Drive option. Other vehicles in 1-Series, including yet-to-come 2-Series Coupe and Convertible, and hatchback all boasts of RWD chassis. Unlike other models in the series, the new MPV will come equipped with Front Wheel Drive (FWD) UKL1 structure as well as an optional All Wheel Drive (AWD) option. The model was recently spied; parked outside one of the test facilities of the brand.
