BMW is in the process of equipping their future models with technology that helps gather data to keep their maps updated. BMW is giving some of their upcoming cars the Mobileye Road Experience Management system.

BMW to equip new models with tech to update their maps

This system can capture data using BMW’s present camera-based driver assist system programs. So in other words, the Mobileye collects information through the car’s camera while it finds objects like kerbs, landmarks and road signs before uploading it to the cloud. The system converts a camera picture into pieces of data, close to 10 kilobytes for one km. However, there are no details on which cars and regions will get this function first, as of now.

It is obvious that such technology is substantial to the growth of autonomous driving, which is why BMW is driving towards it after all. As a matter of fact, real-time information will help autonomous cars to instantly know if there are traffic situations, a road is closed, there’s a diversion, or if there’s a hazard. We will share more news on BMW’s plans for this tech in the time to come, so stay tuned.
