BMW’s top boss Harald Krueger has announced that the brand expects to see its EV sales rise by two thirds in 2017.
As of now, BMW is trying to meet their target of selling 60,000 EVs in 2016 which comprise of the fully-electric and hybrid cars like the i3, i8, and plug-in versions like the X5 xDrive40e, 225xe, 330e, and 740e. The brand revealed that sales of their battery-powered models have touched 100,000 cars since their induction to the fleet in the year 2013.
Meanwhile, BMW believes the electrified models in their fleet will enable them to meet their 2017 target of 100,000 vehicles, and simultaneously cater to the growing requirement for electrified vehicles. "Electric mobility will come, but demand is not going through the roof at the moment," Krueger said. BMW plans to introduce the X3 EV before 2020, and is also working towards doubling the battery range of its i3 since it sold only 25,000 units last year.
The German marque hopes to grab a share of between 15 and 25 per cent of the growing EV sector, in the time to come.
