It was the end of the road for the second-generation Z4 roadster (E89) when BMW stopped its production in August this year. However, the brand has stepped up on the development of its successor, which is pretty evident from these shots.

Reports suggest that BMW aims to slot the Z5 (codenamed G29) into the void created by the exit of the Z4, and it could be ready for the mass market by the end of 2017. BMW has analysed the market extensively, and should go the soft top way for the Z5 considering the current preference for topless cars.

The pictures confirm that the Z5 will basically be an evolution of the Z4, so the two-seater setup with a huge bonnet, large wheels, a compact rear section and the unmistakable BMW kidney grille will continue to be seen on the new car. Inspite of this prototype being in the early stages of development, a visual inspection confirms that the length of the new car is quite similar to the Z4.

Sources report that the BMW Z5 could be introduced in a hybrid version, and for this, Toyota Motor is expected to input their hybrid technology and the related electronics. BMW will be responsible for putting everything together, and as both car makers will be involved, the Z5 could be built at Magna Steyr’s production plant, a factory that assembles automobiles for other companies, at Graz in Austria.
