The BMW X2 is an all-new coupe-crossover from the Bavarian carmaker’s SUV line-up. The X2 is a will be positioned between X1 and X3 when it goes on sale in March 2018. The Munich-based carmaker is expected to bring the X2 to the Indian shores as well once it hits the streets in the international markets.
The all-new X2 is called the ‘Sports Activity Coupe’ by the Bavarian carmaker. It is based on the same UKL platform as the X1. However, the X2 is short enough to lend it a ‘coupe-crossover’ demeanour. It also sits three inches lower than the X1 and has shorter overhangs for a sportier stance. The X2 doesn’t carry much design elements of the X2 Concept showcased at the last year’s Paris Motor Show.
The headlamps are sleeker and sharper. The characteristic Kidney grille is given an all-new design. The front bumper carries a wide gaping air-intake surrounded by faux bash plate. There are circular fog lamps on either side. The X2 carries the BMW roundel on the C-pillar (for the first time on a modern BMW). The wheel arches are squared-off and surrounded by crossover-cladding. At the rear, the design remains simple with LED tail lights and faux skid plate. The X2 can be fitted with different wheels in sizes ranging from 17- to 20-inches.
Being a BMW, the identical cabin of the X2 remains functional, elegant and simple. There is leather upholstery, heads-up display, smartphone integration and the free-floating infotainment screen can be had in either 6.5- or 8.8-inch size. There is a host of driver assist features offered as standard, boasts the German carmaker. The 470-litre boot space is smaller than the X1’s.
BMW is offering the X2 in three trims – Basic, M Sport and Sport X. There are three engines to choose from – one petrol and two diesels – with automatic transmissions. The petrol is a 187bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine in the xDrive20i guise and is available only with a front-wheel-drive. The entry-level diesel is the xDrive20d with 187bhp while the range-topping xDrive25d comes with 227bhp. Both diesels come with xDrive all-wheel-drive and the eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. Meanwhile, the petrol model gets a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Additional variants such as sDrive18i, xDrive20i, X2, sDrive18d and X2 xDrive18d are on the cards and will be added only next year. Surprisingly, there are no plans for an electric-hybrid X2 yet.
