      BMW records higher sales than Mercedes-Benz for the second consecutive year

      BMW passenger car sales for 2012 in United States beat fellow German luxury car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz for the second consecutive year. Sales of BMW rose up by 14 per cent from the preceding year to a record 3,47,583 units. Lexus from Toyota Motor Corporation was third at 2,44,166 units. Interestingly, Lexus had been the highest seller for 11 years until 2011.

      The demand for BMW 5 Series increased by 72 per cent in December 2012 as compared to the figures of year-ago period. BMW was able to push its sales figures hard in December 2012, selling 43,855 units in the month to edge out Mercedes-Benz. The sales of Mercedes-Benz USA were also the highest ever for the company at 3,05,072 units, up by 15.4 per cent from 2011. This figure also included sales of Smart and Sprinter Vans.

      Expressing satisfaction over the figures, Ludwig Willisch, Chief Executive Officer at BMW, North America said, “Being No. 1 means success”. He also added that the sales were helpful in “Making us strongly confident and optimistic as we enter 2013.” Though most luxury brands such as Audi, Infinity and Porsche reported growth, Cadillac went down by 1.7 per cent and Lincoln by 4.1 per cent.
