BMW ramps up to produce the new 5 Series at its Dingolfing plant

BMW has issued a statement revealing that their Dingolfing plant in southern Germany is ramping up to commence production of the new 5 Series. With over 347,000 units of the 5 Series sold in 2015, BMW admitted that their car has been a huge success in the premium upper-class segment for many years.

BMW stated that production of the seventh generation BMW 5 Series will ramp up before the end of this year so that the car is ready for the proposed early 2017 launch. BMW has invested heavily by spending several hundred million Euros in a new body shop and restructuring the drivetrain unit installation process. BMW’s plant in Dingolfing, Germany currently makes 350,000 vehicles a year.

“Dingolfing will remain our competence centre for production of upper class BMW series,” according to Oliver Zipse, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for production. This plant will continue to make all variants of the new BMW 5 Series in addition to manufacturing the 7 Series and 6 Series model line-up. For the first time, additional units of the new BMW 5 Series saloon will also be built by Austrian contract manufacturer Magna Steyr at their plant in Graz.

BMW admitted that the new 5 Series saloon is the second BMW model to be produced by the Austrian contract manufacturer. Their first car was the BMW X3, which was manufactured by Magna Steyr between 2003 and 2010. Magna Steyr also currently builds the MINI Countryman and the MINI Paceman for the BMW Group.
