BMW has introduced a service called ‘CarData’ wherein details such as average fuel economy and kilometres driven are relayed across to secure servers at BMW. The brand believes that this data is key to benefits like reducing insurance premiums if the user elects to share the data with the insurance provider.
Other benefits include swift appointments for service since the workshops will now know about how the car is running and whether they need to order parts in advance. BMW admitted that the data received from their cars will be encrypted and sent to BMW servers who will then share it with private players, but only if the car owner has consented to it.
BMW reiterates that the customer has the final call on what data can be released and to whom by simply opting for the service online. For CarData to work, the BMW car needs have a built-in SIM card and all the car owner needs to do is register in the ConnectedDrive portal for the CarData service which is absolutely free.
Everybody knows that future cars are now moving towards self-driving capabilities. And a number of start-ups are already working towards acquiring and using such data to offer better connected-vehicle services to the customer.
