      BMW India to shift focus on smaller cities

      The Indian units of the Germany based leading car maker BMW will now be focusing on smaller cities and towns to boost its market share and strengthen its position in the Indian market, as per a statement given by a top company official on Wednesday.

      Andreas Schaaf, BMW India president, said in a statement on Wednesday that the company aimed to have 60 dealership facilities by 2015 from the existing 24. He added that the company plans to have 40 centers within the next one and a half years. Further, it is to expand to 60 facilities by 2015. He was speaking at the occasion of the launch of a new dealership of the company in Goa.

      According to company, at present, major cities including Mumbai and Delhi accounts for about 70 percent of the total sales of the company in the Indian market.

      While further elaborating company’s India strategy, Mr. Schaaf said, "We did not engage traditional dealers. The company searched for like-minded dealers who would identify themselves with our ideology."

      As per the company, currently it has about 41 percent share in the luxury car segment in the country. The company sells a range of luxury sedans and SUVs in the country including the likes of 3 Series, 5 Series, X1, X3, X5, etc.
