BMW India is gearing up towards the launch of its much hyped 1 Series range of luxury hatchbacks in the domestic luxury car market. The German auto maker has commenced the marketing campaign of 1 Series, through which it would send 10 lucky winners to Germany. The winners would enjoy first hand experience of driving the 1 Series car and would get a chance to meet global cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar and Armaan Ebrahim, the FIA GT1 World Championship race driver.

Upon its arrival on the Indian turf, BMW 1 Series will take on Mercedes-Benz A-Class and B-Class luxury hatchbacks. The 1 Series is expected to become the German luxury auto maker's cheapest offering in its domestic portfolio and could see Indian daylight sometime around this year's festival season. The 1 Series would be retailed via Completely Built Units (CBU) route initially. However, it is expected that BMW could begin selling 1 Series as Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits as well and the model would be assembled at the company's Chennai manufacturing facility.

As per industry sources, the Indian market would get two petrol and three diesel trim levels of 1 Series, all of which would have a five-door design. The petrol 1 Series trim is powered by a 1.6 litre engine, which is tuned to develop different peak power outputs of 136 bhp and 170 bhp. Further, diesel variants are powered with a 2.0 litre motor with different power outputs of 184 bhp, 143 bhp and 116 bhp. The German auto maker is expected to launch its 1 Series range within an introductory price bracket of Rs. 20 to 25 lakh in the Indian auto market.
