India is moving towards more environmentally fuels and automobiles. It has already implemented new emission norms, Euro IV or Bharat Stage IV norms, in 13 cities of India. Rest of the cities in India have Euro III norms being implemented. However, in order to comply with the rules the remaining cities of India need to have Euro III compliant fuel across the country. Currently only few cities like Goa have started selling Euro III fuel while remaining cities are still awaiting their turn.

Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh and Maharashtra will have better and cleaner fuel in all cities from June 01 this year. 17 other States and Union Territories will sell Euro III fuel from July 01, 2010. States like Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Tamil Nadu and Western UP will even switch to Euro IV grade of fuel from July 01. Petrol pumps in eastern UP, Bihar and Jharkhand will sell Euro III diesel from July 01 but petrol will be available only from October 01.

Oil companies had requested the government to levy the BS III or Euro III norms from October 01, 2010 in all cities across the country. However, the request was denied stating that stage wise implementation is a more viable solution. The government has already assured the EPCA or Environmental Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority that all cities will sell better fuel from July 01. EPCA had been pressuring the government to pre pone the deadline at least in Karnataka where there is high level of pollution.
