The utility vehicle segment is being widely cited as one of the fastest emerging in the Indian passenger car market. The rampant emergence of compact Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) has pumped great energy in the domestic market with many young products fighting for segment domination. The premium SUV scene is also going through trend shifting phase with the arrival of Mahindra Rexton last year.

The year 2012 witnessed some great sales in the compact SUV segment. At present, Renault Duster, Mahindra Quanto and Premier Rio compete against each other on domestic turf. Evidently, Duster and Quanto have been the breakthrough products of the segment and broke all records in terms of sales and advanced bookings in the country. The compact SUV segment targets those car enthusiasts who look towards owning a vehicle, which is both compact and quick, besides having credentials of little off-roading as well.

Mahindra and Mahindra Limited (M&M), the country's leading utility vehicle maker, offers its Quanto to domestic audience at price tag of between Rs. 6 lakhs and Rs. 7.5 lakhs. On the other hand, Renault has introduced its Duster at a price range of Rs. 7.5 lakhs to Rs. 11.8 lakhs in the Indian auto market. Hence, in terms of pricing, Quanto looks like a better option over Renault Duster. However, the performance oriented buyers will definitely opt for Duster, owing to its sturdier built and superior power output, over Quanto.

Further, an intense fight is also going on between Renault Duster, Mahindra XUV500 and Tata Safari Storme, in the sub 15 lakhs premium SUV segment of Indian market. The Duster cannot compete against XUV500 and Storme in terms of engine power and torque performance, because of its smaller engine. The Mahindra XUV500 is one of the best selling utility vehicles in the country and is the undisputed champion of the segment, at the moment. The XUV500 is available in Indian market within a price range of Rs. 11.8 lakhs and Rs. 14.3 lakhs, whereas Safari Storme carries retail price tag between Rs. 9.9 lakhs and Rs. 13.7 lakhs. Hence, no acute winner emerges between XUV500 and Safari Storme in terms of pricing, but the Mahindra SUV seems to have a better ground on account of its superior looks and road presence.

At present, the premium SUV segment (+15 lakhs) includes the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Mahindra SsangYong Rexton, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Hyundai Santa Fe, Nissan X-trail and Chevrolet Captiva, amongst others, competing against each other. The Toyota Fortuner contributes to a majority of sales in the premium SUV segment and witnesses little competition from its direct rivals. However, the arrival of SsangYong Rexton seems to be changing the prevalent scene, rather quickly. The Rexton SUV is offered to local audience within a price bracket of Rs. 17.7 to 19.7 lakhs, whereas Fortuner is available with price tags starting from Rs. 21.4 lakhs, which goes on till Rs. 22.5 lakhs. Hence, the Rexton definitely has an upper hand over Fortuner by a huge margin in terms of pricing, besides possessing best-in-class power and torque outputs in its overall package.
