      At present, the Indian passenger car market offers a number of exciting diesel powered models across all the major segments. CarTrade.com has rounded up a list of best diesel cars offered to domestic audience in the auto sector.

The engine assembly comes mated with a five speed manual transmission system. Further, the 1.0 litre engine delivers an impressive fuel economy of 25.44 kmpl (ARAI certified). At present, General Motors, the American multinational car maker, offers its diesel variant of its Chevrolet Beat hatch at a starting price tag of Rs. 4.6 lakhs, which goes on till Rs. 5.8 lakhs for the topmost trim-level.

      Speaking of the best diesel car in entry-level sedan segment, the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire diesel is the undisputed champion of the Indian passenger car market. Swift DZire comes equipped with the critically acclaimed 1.3 litre, 1,248 cc DDiS diesel powertrain in DOHC (Double Over Head Camshaft) configuration. The DDiS (Direct Diesel Injection System) engine is trimmed with several cutting-edge technologies, such as CRDI fuel injection system, along with turbocharger and intercooler combination. Further, the 1.3 litre DDiS engine churns out a peak power output of 74 bhp at 4,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 190 Nm at 2000 rpm. Maruti Suzuki offers its Swift DZire to domestic audience within a price bracket of Rs. 6 to 7.5 lakhs in the country.

      At present, some stiff competition is going on between the luxury sedans around Rs. 10 lakhs price tag in the country. The intense rivalry includes Hyundai Verna Fluidic, Maruti Suzuki SX4, Skoda Rapid and Volkswagen Vento amongst others. Arguably, Hyundai Verna Fluidic diesel is the best value-for-money diesel powered product available in the segment. The stylish sedan comes assimilated with a 1.5 litre, 1,493 cc, CRDi VGT powertrain, which rolls out an excellent power output performance of 109 bhp at 4,000 rpm. The South Korean car maker has pitched its Verna Fluidic diesel with a base price tag of Rs. 8.4 lakhs that goes on till Rs. 11.3 lakhs in the country.

      Coming to the utility vehicle segment of the Indian auto market, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Mahindra XUV500 are the best diesel products of their respective classes. The Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) Ertiga comes equipped with a 1.3 litre. 1,248 cc DDiS diesel engine that belts out 88.8 bhp of peak power. Maruti Suzuki retails the diesel powered variant of its Ertiga MPV at a base price tag of Rs. 7.4 lakhs that goes on till Rs. 8.7 lakhs in the domestic passenger car market.

      Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) Limited offers its XUV500 SUV within a price bracket of Rs. 11.8 to 14.4 lakhs in the Indian auto market. The XUV500 comes fitted with a 2.2 litre, 2,179 cc mHawk turbo diesel powertrain that belts out 140 bhp of maximum power output along with an impressive torque delivery of 330 Nm. The engine assembly comes assimilated with an all-new sophisticated six speed manual transmission system.
