Chevrolet Spark, which is more popularly known as the Beat in India, has been placed among the top four car models from Chevrolet to win the 2015 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick Awards. Apart from the Beat, other Chevrolet models, which made to the list were Equinox, Malibu and Volt. Equinox won in the category of mid size SUVs, while Malibu did the same in the mid size sedan category. Beat was the winner in the mini car segment and Volt was awarded in the category of small cars. This award goes to those cars, which secure a commendable rating in the highly challenging small overlap front test. This test was introduced in 2012 and a good rating means the car performs well in the four crash worthiness evaluations standards – head restrains, roof strength, side and overlap front.

Steven Majoros, the Director of Chevrolet Cars and Crossover Marketing, said, “Receiving this recognition from IIHS for the 2015 Spark, Volt, Malibu and Equinox is great news for Chevrolet and even greater news for our customers.”

Incidentally, IIHS is a non-profit organisation, which is totally supported by the auto insurers. The year 2015 witnessed a jump of 39 to 71 in a year in the number of car models, which fitted in the Top Safety Pick and the Top Safety Pick+ award.

Jeff Boyer, Vice President GM, Global Vehicle Safety, said, “Consumer metric programs such as IIHS Top Safety Pick and NHTSA NCAP provide our customers with information to make comparisons across vehicle manufacturers for a given market segment. Having these four vehicles named 2015 IIHS Top Safety Picks is a great achievement.”
