Two wheeler and car manufacturers in Ahmedabad have been doing a good business during 2012 Jagannath Rath Yatra despite the impending threats posed by the slow market. Compared to last year, most of retailers are reporting a surge of 5-10 per cent in their sales volumes owing to the lucrative insurance offers and free add-ons offered during this year's Yatra.

The higher demand for the vehicles can be illustrated by the fact that the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has launched a special registration number series to benefit from the festivities. People consider it auspicious to purchase new belongings and take deliveries of vehicles on Ashadhi Bij, which is the day on which the Yatra is held.

A dealer of Honda, Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen cars, Sanjay Thakker, said, "With worsening market conditions across the country we weren't expecting high sales for this year. So, we, too, were surprised by the jump in sales. On Thursday, we will be delivering 250 cars." He further stated that unlike other states, the demand for cars in Gujarat continues to surge. In 2011, more than 6,000 vehicles, including both two wheelers and cars, were sold in Ahmedabad on the day of the Yatra. However, this year is expected to mark a growth of over 10 per cent compared to last year.

Sukhbir Bagga, a dealer who sells Yamaha, Suzuki, Nissan and Hyundai vehicles, stated that car sales have grown by 5 per cent since last year and more than 10 per cent in case of two wheelers. His outlet delivered 350 two wheelers and 200 cars on the auspicious day. Majority of the automotive dealers in the Ahmedabad kept their shutters up till late on the day of the Yatra to handle the demand. The cars in Rs. 4 to 10 lacs segment have witnessed the highest demand. Unfortunately for Maruti Suzuki, its sales were 10 to 15 per cent lesser this year as compared to 2011.

RTO official, Jyotish Bhatt, said, "During the last few days, vehicles sales had taken a hit and there were hardly any new registrations. However, for Rath Yatra almost all dealers in the city are set to make a killing. We have even launched a new vehicle registrations series and expect to generate Rs. 2 crores revenue from sales of attractive numbers.
