      Auto Expo: Magneti Marelli showcases its product line and technologies

      Magneti Marelli, a part of Fiat S.p.A., will make its presence felt at the New Delhi Auto for the second time Expo when it will showcase its range of products and solutions for the domestic market. The company has brought technologies like Freechoice Automated manual transmission, telematics, powertrain flexfuel systems for CNG, and lighting solutions to the event.

      The company has included all the fields that it operates in, namely automotive lighting, electronic systems, powertrain solutions, suspensions and shock absorbers and motorsport, with emphasis on the work it has done in India. The firm has signed 7 Joint Ventures with prominent Indian companies in the last 4 years to consolidate its position in the country. Presently, it has 7 fully-operational manufacturing units, while work will begin at another facility as a part of a JV it signed for suspensions recently.

      Magneti Marelli offers its range of world-class technologies at affordable costs in India due to a prominent manufacturing setup as well as an expanding local R&D infrastructure. The company has brought a range of products into the limelight, including the Freechoice AMT (Automated Manual Transmission), a unique electro-hydraulic technology that can easily make manual transmission systems automated. This is a first for the domestic market and reflects the perfect amalgamation of driving comfort, lower emissions and reduced consumption.

      Telematics and infotainment solutions will be highlighted at the electronic systems section. The company has exhibited ‘telematic boxes’ as well as the latest infotainment systems that are developed on the open-source platform, which bring together navigation, multimedia and connectivity.

      The GDI systems will be on display at the powertrain area, streamlining performance and reducing consumption in petrol engines. The manufacturer has also stressed upon capabilities in processing and crafting multi-coloured plastic and polycarbonate, which is an important consideration for the prominent car manufacturers in India as well as the market itself.

      The technologies used in two-wheelers are also in focus at the event. Apart from its array of instrument clusters, Magneti Marelli provides several powertrain products and technologies, such as the all-new ‘S-MIU’ engine control system. This enables manufacturers to assemble two- and three-wheelers with an electronic injection conveniently, at an affordable price.

      The company has also focussed upon the newest iterations of its motogenerators and control units for electric-hybrid engines at the mega show. Apart from that, a range of components and modules for suspensions, such as the most sophisticated solutions for the field of weight reduction, are also in the limelight, within the limitations of its JV with Talbros, a domestic company. Along with this, Magneti Marelli has also exhibited solutions for electronic control of suspensions, termed Synaptic Damping Control, as well as new shock absorber technologies, such as dual stage valves and hydraulic drives, at its stall. The company has also showcased its exhaust systems, which are essential for reducing emissions and giving ‘personality’ to the vehicle, as per the theme ‘from noise to sound’.

      Ample space is dedicated to the 90 year old legacy of Magneti Marelli, with an exhibition of its expertise in the technological aspect of Motorsport. This includes showcasing of the best solutions and systems used by the most prominent teams in the global automobile and motorcycle championships, such as Formula 1, GP2, FIA GT, WRC, WTCC, AMA, MotoGP and Superbike. The racing-oriented GDI injection systems that will be used in the F1 races from 2014, Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) and a range of injectors, pumps, data loggers, electric drives for gearboxes, electronic control units and dashboards will also be showcased at the event.

      In India, Magneti Marelli has signed JVs with the companies listed below since 2007:

      •    Maruti Suzuki India Limited and Suzuki Motor Company for electronic control units of diesel engines

      •    Sumi Motherson Group for lighting and powertrain components

      •    SKH Metals Limited and SKH Sheet Metal Components Limited (two branches of the Krishna Group) for

      manufacturing automobile exhaust systems

      •    Endurance Technologies Pvt. Ltd. for motor vehicle shock absorbers

      •    Unitech Machines for automotive electronic systems

      •    Talbros Automotive Components Limited (TACL) for suspensions (in November 2011)
