Evalia was earlier known as NV200; however, the Japanese auto maker recently changed its name. The Nissan NV200 has been awarded ‘International Van of the Year’ in 2010. The unveiling was done by Gilles Norman, Vice President of Nissan Middle East, Africa and India. The ‘Rockstar of Bollywood’ Ranbir Kapoor was also present at the event.
Nissan has made its presence in the Indian automobile market through its hatchback Micra, sedan Sunny and three other CBU (Completely Built Units) models. The production of the recently unveiled Nissan Evalia will begin in the later half of this year at the company’s production facility near Chennai. The other vehicles unveiled along with the MPV were the Nissan GT-R and the electric car Nissan Leaf.
Jointly built by Nissan and Renault, Evalia is the very first Urban-Class Utility Vehicle and is based on the B-platform. The Nissan Evalia is spacious and can comfortably accommodate around 7 adults. Evalia with its huge cabin space and luggage compartment intends to compete with the popular Toyota Innova. The wheelbase of Evalia is 2725 mm almost the same size as Toyota Innova, which is around 2750 mm.
The interiors have been designed keeping in mind the comfort of travellers, like the comfortable seats. In the front cabin, the dashboard comprises an instrument panel, a music system in the centre, glove box and air conditioning vents. The car has a three spoke power steering with buttons and controls on it for easy handling. The bottle holder at each end of the dashboard is a feature that is found even in the international model. The rear seats of the Evalia are foldable that offer for extra luggage. There is enough legroom and headspace.
In terms of looks also Evalia scores well. It is impressive and stylish with sleek front doors and a short bonnet. The serrated grille and angular headlamps are quite prominent. The front of the car slopes towards the bumper and has triangular multi-reflector halogen headlamps. The lower section of the car has a black air dam attached to the body-coloured bumper that also has round fog lamps. The Evalia has sliding rear doors for easy access and regress, along with diamond shaped ORVMs (Outer Rear View Mirrors). The rear is box-shaped and with low taillights, two reflectors and a high stop lamp.
The Nissan Evalia is quite powerful and equipped with a 1.5-litre, 4 cylinder, in-line common rail, turbocharger with intercooler diesel engine. It will generate a maximum power of 83 hp at 3750 rpm and peak torque of 200 Nm at 2000 rpm. The MPV has 5 speed manual transmission and the capacity of the fuel tank is about 55 litres. Evalia may also be available with a 1.6 HR16DE, 4 cylinder petrol engine capable of producing 106 bhp of power and 153 Nm of torque. The overall length, width and height of the Nissan Evalia are 4400 mm, 1695 mm and 1880 mm, respectively. This passenger vehicle is equipped with 14 inches alloy wheels and 175/70R14C sized tyres.
Nissan has also incorporated other features like SRS dual front airbags, parking sensors, anti-lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), power windows and central locking with remote. It also has remote boot, remote fuel filler, rear wiper and defogger, and rear armrest with cup holder. Intelligent key, advanced integrated air conditioning system, audio system, rear view camera and front fog lamps are few other prominent features. In order to ensure smooth manoeuvring, the vehicle is assimilated with front disc, rear drum brakes, rigid rear forks and strut front suspension along with tiltable steering wheel.
Nissan Evalia is likely to compete with Maruti Ertiga, Mahindra Xylo, Mercedes Benz R Class and Toyota Innova in the Indian automobile market. It is expected to have a price tag between Rs. 6 lacs and Rs. 8 lacs.
