Audi India, the domestic division of German premium car maker, seems to be preparing for the launch of a new variant, S, of its flagship compact Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) Q3 in the country. Sources close to the development process revealed that the upcoming S variant in Q3 line up will be the base model with a price tag of over Rs. 20 lakh. Industry experts are of a view that the launch of an economical variant of Q3 will surely grab the attention of price sensitive Indian buyers, which will probably assist the auto maker in turning the tides in its favour.

Audi Q3 was introduced a year back in the Indian auto market and is currently brought as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). Sources further hint that the brand with four rings is also working on commencing the local assembly of Q3 in the country very soon. Interestingly, the upcoming Q3 S will keep few luxury features at bay as it will be an economical model. Advancements such like panoramic sunroof and Audi Quattro system are expected to be not present in the upcoming model of the German auto maker. In place of Audi Quattro system, auto analysts are expecting a front wheel drive layout.

Coming to the technical figures of the upcoming model, it will come equipped with the same 2.0 litre TDI diesel engine, which will now churn out a maximum power of around 140 bhp and peak torque of 320 Nm. It must be noted that the ongoing 2.0 litre engine produces 177 bhp of maximum power, owing to Audi Quattro drive system. Also, the automatic gearbox of the car will be replaced with the 6-speed manual transmission system.

The launch of a new economically priced model by Audi India is a clear indication that the Indian auto market is going through not so good times. Interestingly, the ongoing entry level model of Audi is Q3, which is tagged with a price of Rs. 27.2 lakh. The condition of market is so unfavourable that the company is forced to introduce a new entry level product with a reduced price.
