German luxury car maker Audi is planning on downsizing its engine sizes to increase fuel economy. Audi intends to meet its dual criteria of offering performance and better fuel efficiency from one engine itself. It seems like a tough task given that its engines are one of the best performers in the industry and yet they are extremely thirsty.

Audi had introduced 4.2L V8 engine in 2004 and had termed it be one of their best in 10 years but later it went on to introduce the V6 engine that delivered 27 percent better fuel efficiency and surprisingly it also yielded better performance. According to the recent statement from the Audi spokesperson, the company is back to its engineering room once again to introduce better performing engines that will be definitely more fuel efficient. “Audi is pursuing an engine downsizing strategy when appropriate for the market segment,” said Audi spokesman Christian Bokich to the media.

Audi is also planning to introduce hybrid and electric vehicles in the international market.
