Electric cars and scooters have become quite popular in the modern generation. As more and more people around the country understand the necessity to keep the atmosphere clean and reducing its pollution, the popularity of electric bikes are increasing. Additionally, electric vehicles are catching the wind quickly not only in India, but also around the globe. As a result, several governments of various countries are supporting, promoting and boosting the manufacture of such vehicles. The Indian Government is not far behind and it has a National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP). The target of this entity is to have six to seven million electric vehicles functioning on the road by 2020. However, things are easier said than done. The project is yet to witness the dawn of the day and looking for a miracle to meet the expectations.

This program has given the opportunity to several independent automobile manufacturers to make the mark in this field. In order to take an early lead in the electric vehicles, a Chennai based organization named Ather, is developing an electric two-wheeler. What separates this model from the rest is that it is expected to be developed on the platform of a high-speed two-wheeler. The team is comparatively quite young and had been recently founded in IIT Madras. The team has been working on the project for few months, now.

There have not been any official disclosures about the specifications of the scooter from Ather. However, the upcoming brand is marketing the two-wheeler as a high-speed model, which is the prime focus of this scooter. It is expected to churn out a maximum speed of 75 kilometres per hour, which is really commendable for a scooter of this size and power. Also, another important aspect, which will boost this product in the market, is its lightweight nature. Once launched, this model will be approximately 20 per cent lighter than the petrol variants. All credit for the lightweight nature of this bike goes to the battery pack, which weighs just 15 kilograms. The battery also is capable of getting charged eight times faster than normal. Eighty per cent of the charging is done within the first hour. Incredibly, the scooter is capable of reaching 60 kilometres per hour from ignition within 11 seconds. Apart from this fact, the scooter also features an instrument cluster, which is powered by Android.

Incidentally, Flipkart founders Binny and Sachin Bansal have invested 6.1 crores INR in the company. The scooter will roll out in 2016; however the test rides will happen soon in Bangalore and Chennai.
