Hindustan Motors, a well-known Indian automobile maker, is developing a sub-4 metre version of its iconic Ambassador sedan for the domestic passenger car market. The upcoming new model is rumoured to be called Ambassador compact sedan and would enjoy lower excise duty regulations.

As per reports, the compact version of the Ambassador sedan could be cheaper by up to Rs. 70,000, as compared to the full-sized model. Industry sources suggest that Hindustan Motors’ upcoming Ambassador compact sedan could carry introductory price tags around Rs. 4 to 5 lakh, upon its launch in the Indian auto market.

Speaking of under-the-hood specifications of Ambassador compact sedan, the car could be powered with a 1.5 litre turbo diesel motor that would be compliant with the necessary BS IV emission ratings. This would enable the car to be introduced in all major Indian metropolitan cities, such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Kolkata, amongst others. The Ambassador compact sedan is expected to be launched in the domestic car market by the end of 2013 calendar year or sometime in the beginning of next year.

Hindustan Motors’ upcoming Ambassador compact sedan would compete in the entry level sedan segment of the Indian auto market. Therefore, the car’s stiffest rivals would include the likes of Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire, Honda Amaze, Chevrolet Sail and Tata Indigo eCS. Therefore, it is going to be interesting to see how the small Ambassador fares against its immensely well established competitors in the domestic passenger car market.
