The leading car manufacturers of India, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, are fighting for supremacy in the small car segment with their Alto and Eon, respectively. Maruti has managed to sustain its brand value with Alto, a car for conservative buyers. Hyundai does not lag behind with its Eon, the company’s cheapest car yet in the hatchback segment. The Korean company has an advantage over Alto, as Eon is a new model with modern styling and good technology.

On the design front, Eon surpasses Alto as the former has stylish, sporty and elegant looks. The hexagonal grille and large swept-back headlights give an appealing and refreshing look to Eon. Alto has a flat side body which makes restoring dents easier in the long run.

Unlike Hyundai Eon’s 814 cc engine with SOHC motor with three valves per cylinder, Alto's larger 998-cc mill has four valves per cylinder, which makes Alto more powerful. Both the cars can rev up to a maximum speed of 120 kmph but Eon loses if the accelerator is pushed harder.

Alto and Eon are equipped with electrically assisted steering with a tight turning radius. Alto has an advantage in this front as the steering is direct and natural while Eon lacks self-centering action.

Both the manufacturers have vast networks of service stations and dealerships. The proven track-record of low maintenance and reliability makes Indians shell out a little extra for a better, feature-rich product. Considering the features of the two cars, it is quite difficult to pick a clear winner among the two cars, thus providing sufficient options to the buyers.
