BMW’s next big thing, the 2017 5 Series has been spied testing again, however, it’s worth noting that this next-gen model will sport an evolutionary design instead of a revolutionary look.

The next 5 Series, in fact, will feature BMW’s current design trends like the headlights which merge into the kidney grille and a more muscular looking bodywork. The taillights will also be redesigned and made to look sleeker and longer than the current F10 generation car.

The entire 5 Series range, in fact, will be built using BMW’s next-gen platform called “35up”. This new architecture will bring lightweight materials and construction to BMW’s mass production models. Inside, there will be a redesigned dashboard with the free-standing LCD display and tons of premium features currently found in higher-end BMWs. The car will also get the new iDrive system with touchscreen and gesture-based functions.

In terms of engines, BMW will group 500-cc cylinders together to create three, four and six cylinder engines with 60 per cent common parts. A 2-litre, four-cylinder will power the 520d and the 231bhp 525d, while the more potent 272bhp version will be used in the 528i. There will also be a 286bhp diesel engine in the 530d, a 333bhp unit in the 535d and the M550d with 400bhp.

The new 5 Series range will be officially out early next year. The car will compete with other mid-size luxury sedans like the Mercedes E-Class, Audi A6 and the recently launched all-new Jaguar XF.
