In terms of real sale numbers, 11,416 units of Fortuner were sold during April-November 2013 period, thereby registering a jump of whooping 12 per cent. Other vehicles in the same segment like Ford Endeavour, Mahindra Rexton, Chevrolet Captiva, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mitsubishi Pajero, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Renault Koleos and Skoda Yeti have recorded lower sales in the first 8 months of this current fiscal year as against the corresponding period of last year.

On this development, Sandeep Singh, Chief Operating Officer, Marketing and Commercial at Toyota Kirloskar Motors, reportedly said, “We have been able to maintain the demand momentum for Fortuner since its launch and managed to further increase it this year.” He also said, “Fortuner caters to all the requirements, of a customer, of a complete SUV.”

In general, demand for SUVs has consistently increased over past few years, but an increase in tax rate on big vehicles has undeniably affected the market in 2013. Customers are now showing a positive drift to compact vehicles like Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport. As per the trade data from SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers), an increase in excise duty has hit top Indian utility makers like Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors.

As per statistics revealed, in this fiscal year, sales of Hyundai Santa Fe fell down by 44 per cent to 302 units, Skoda Yeti by 60 per cent to 335 units and Ford Endeavour by almost 50 per cent to 534 units. On the contrary, Toyota Fortuner has seen a favourable gain in both, volume and market share. Some industry experts have expressed that good run is likely to continue to thrive in the Indian market as Fortuner, which boasts of a very high riding position, is being preferred by youth and middle age people, alike. Some experts believe that vehicle's overall appeal has the right cut to get popular in urban, semi-urban and rural areas. Since its launch in August 2009, Toyota has already sold over 57,500 units of Fortuner.
