Volkswagen will unveil the next generation of its most successful hactchback, the Polo, at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show which will take place in September.
The new gen Polo is an important car for the German giant and is developed ground up. The seventh generation Polo will be based on the MQB-A0 platform and therefore will grow in dimension with a longer wheelbase making it bigger, roomier yet lighter than the outgoing car. The design will be more modern and appealing with reworked headlights, sloping roofline and a tweaked stance to attract a broader spectrum of audience. The cladded Cross Polo is rumoured to be axed to make way for a new product which will share the platform with the Polo but will have an optional all-wheel drive setup. On the inside, the new gen Polo will continue with higher emphasis on quality. Volkswagen will throw in all the features and equipment found in the larger cars like the digital instrument cluster, new infotainment screen, automatic parking and an array of active and passive safety systems.
As far as the powertrains are concerned, the next Polo will come with an assortment of engines. The entry-level Polo will be powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit producing between 64bhp and 113bhp. The 1.2-litre engine is likely to be dropped from the line-up, while the 1.4-litre four-pot petrol will be replaced by 1.5-litre turbo petrol from the Golf. The hotter GTI version will make use of a 2.0-litre mill pushing the 200bhp barrier. The diesel option will get the updated 1.6-litre oil burner producing between 79 and 108bhp. Unlike in the Golf, the Polo won’t receive a hybrid or electric treatment any soon. Transmission options would include five/six-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG.
After an official debut at the Frankfurt, the new-gen Polo will go on sale in European market later this year or in early 2018.
