The new generation Volkswagen Polo has been slated for its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show later this year and luckily, the new Polo has been spotted without camouflage. The new Polo will be based on the MQB platform, MQB-A0 to be precise away from the current PQ25 platform. The new platform will allow the car to be lighter, more spacious and probably cost lesser to build.
Like most Volkswagen group cars, the new-generation Polo is not strikingly different from the current car. But look closely and you will find a sea of changes. The new design is angular and makes the classic hatchback design look sleeker with its long-ish hood and raked windshield. The headlamps are blacked out twin-barrel units flanking the horizontally slatted grille. The mesh air dam on the bumper is split into two with the fog lamps nested at the two ends. The profile is similar but the shoulder contour and raked C-pillar sets it apart. Even the new tail lamps will remind you of the current car.
Volkswagen’s strategy to shift the Polo to the MQB platform will give us the new Polo sedan (Vento) as well as the Polo-based compact crossover SUV – the T-Cross. While we do not have a clear idea about the interiors, we can very well say that the powertrains offered on the current Polo will continue to perform their duties in the next-generation car, at least for the Indian model. The global car might get hybrid or even full electric mills under the hood.
With the global debut by the end of this year, the all-new Polo should hit Indian shores by 2018.
