Chevrolet Corvette will receive a high-performance iteration that will be positioned above the Z06. Called the ZR1, the car has been spotted testing a few times now, however, this time around, the new Corvette ZR1 will receive a drop-top sibling as well. The test mule for the same was spotted at the GM’s Milford Proving Grounds.
As can be seen in the images, the Convertible ZR1 has retained the same body as the Coupe, with a fabric roof top. However, compared to the earlier spy shots of the ZR1 Coupe, the size of the rear wing has been downsized. Whether the reason to do was practical or just plain aesthetic, the fact remains that this smaller rear wing would be far more convenient on the drop top. The wheels and other body panels are similar to the coupe, however, what’s under the cladded hood is the biggest mystery of the ZR1, so for.
For the starters, there are rumours that it houses the tuned version of V8 LT4 from the Corvette Z06 and Camaro ZL1, with an added oomph from a large supercharger. However, the word on the streets is that the all-new LT5 V8 with the double-overhead camshaft (DOHC) would make its debut in the new ZR1 before it finds its home in the new mid-engine C8 Corvette slated for next year. The power output should be anything above the 700 horsepower mark. There is an option for a seven-speed manual transmission, but the new 10-speed automatic transmission developed by GM and Ford seems like the better choice between the two.
Dropping the hard-top might affect the track performance of the new ZR1 Convertible, however, the performance tyres with better brakes might make the new ZR1 so much more fun. Especially after hearing the sonorous V8 with the top down.
The ZR1 Coupe is speculated to be launched at this year’s Continental Tire Road Race Showcase IMSA event. The convertible might be making its debut alongside it.
