The upcoming generation of the BMW M5 will be unleashed by late 2017 or early 2018. BMW though is actively testing this high-performance model as prototypes continue to appear under the radar. This time around the new M5 was spied testing in the Mojave Desert.

The talking point of this car is the fact that it will be offered with an optional all-wheel drive system for the first time in its history. Power meanwhile will come from the same V8 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine from the current model. The engine however will be massaged to deliver up to 625bhp.

The current-gen M5 is bit of a heavy weight but the 2018 model will be significantly lighter as the new 5 Series is expected to drop plenty of weight by switching to the new 35up platform that’s seen in the new 7 Series.

Rather interestingly, this time around BMW is expected to bring back the highly desirable M5 Touring to take on the likes of Audi RS6 Avant, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG estate and other fast wagons.
