Volvo has showcased its India bound S90 at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The sedan debuted at the2016 Detroit Motor Show replaces the ageing S80 range in the Chinese-owned Swedish automaker’s range globally.
The S90 has all the hallmarks of the new Volvo design including the iron mark front grille, Thor hammer headlamps which have also been featured on the XC90 SUV. Volvo has dubbed S90 a coupe with four doors rather than an outright sedan. This is visible in the low roofline and forward leaning stance. The cabin of the S90 is pretty similar to that of the XC90 with the minimalist design thanks to the large touchscreen and absence of any major buttons on the dashboard.
On the engine front, the S90 will be offered the same lineup as the XC90. This includes the 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine that produces 225bhp/470Nm of torque. The powertrain is completed by an eight-speed AT that sends power to the front wheels or all wheels via and AWD system. In terms of petrol engines there will be a T6 model powered as well as a top-of-the-line T8 hybrid variant.
Volvo has always been the pioneer with regard to safety features in vehicles and the S90 has not skimped even one bit when it comes to this department. Apart from the usual plethora of airbags and driver aids there is also a semi-autonomous drive Pilot Assist and the IntelliSafe Assist as standard equipment. The latter tech includes Adaptive Cruise Control and Distance Alert.
The S90 and its estate sibling the V90 will be launched for the European markets over the course of this year. As we had said earlier, the S90 sedan will come to India by the end of this year and is expected to be offered in both petrol and diesel variants.
