Honda Cars India Limited, a completely owned subsidiary of Japanese multinational auto maker Honda Motor Company, is less than two weeks away from the launch of its facelift model of CR-V compact Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) in the domestic auto market. As per reports, the 2013 Honda CR-V will hit the company's retail outlets on February 12, 2013 in India. The Japanese auto major will be pitching its new CR-V model against a number of respectable segment contenders, such as Mahindra SsangYong Rexton, Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Outlander, Nissan X-Trail and Chevrolet Captiva.

At present, Mahindra SsangYong Rexton premium SUV units are selling like hot cakes in the Indian auto market. The SsangYong Rexton is relatively a new in the domestic scene, but with help from Mahindra's brand name, the model has garnered some impressive sales in the country. The upcoming Honda CR-V will be pitched around the same pricing (below Rs. 20 lakhs) of Rexton and hence, some fireworks are expected when both models enter into a face off on domestic turf.

From the initial spy shots, the 2013 Honda CR-V looks stunning and cutting-edge in terms of overall visual appeal, mannish design language and exterior build. Being a Honda model, the interiors are expected to be of world class quality in the CR-V facelift. The Rexton is beast on the outside and will have a better ground clearance than CR-V. However, interiors of Honda CR-V will definitely triumphs over those of Rexton.

Coming to under-the-hood specifications of upcoming 2013 Honda CR-V, the model is anticipated to come fitted with a 2.0 litre, 4-cylinder, i-VTEC petrol motor, in 4x2 configuration. The top-end CR-V trim is expected to incorporate a more powerful 2.4 litre power-mill and will be offered with an All Wheel Drive (AWD) feature. Both the engines are expected to come mated with either five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission systems.

On the other hand, Mahindra SsangYong Rexton is available in two diesel options– RX5 and RX7 in the Indian auto market. The Rexton RX5 model comes fitted with a 2.7 litre, 2,696 cc, RX270 XDi diesel powertrain under its hood, which belts out a peak power and torque outputs of 162 bhp and 340 Nm, respectively. The top-end trim Rexton RX7 comes assimilated with the same but slightly tweaked 2.7 litre RX270 XVT diesel engine that rolls out an incredible power and torque equation of 184 bhp and 402 Nm, respectively. Accordingly, the comparison between Rexton and CR-V draws to a blank in power and torque performance, but the missing diesel option in the Honda SUV raises doubts regarding its future in India. It was the lack of a diesel model that led Honda Cars India to discontinue its CR-V in the domestic passenger car market last year.
