With several worthy contenders already battling it out in the D-segment sedan category in Indian auto market and the much anticipated Hyundai Elantra making a comeback in Fluidic Avatar, the segment is heating up a lot. The competition is also being stirred up by the facelift being endowed on the popular models by the car makers; the recent face-lifted models include the Chevrolet Cruze and the Renault Fluence. However, taking a look at the segment it is tough to pinpoint at a single model to be the clear winner since the D-segment of sedan has grown like a weed over past few years.

The all new neo Elantra Fluidic will be directly squaring off against the Renault Fluence, Chevrolet Cruze and the Corolla Altis among others. Hyundai Elantra in its latest version also happens to be the one with the most contemporary look from the aesthetic point of view, along with aerodynamically enhanced Fluidic sculpture. On the other hand, though the Chevrolet Cruze may have recently received a facelift, the car maker decided to keep the exterior more or less the same. Renault Fluence maintains a distinctive French style, which gives it a unique road presence.

On the grounds of interiors, Cruze takes home all the accolades owing to its all black interiors, which render a classy look to the car. At the same time, the French car maker has tried to keep the interiors in the Fluence a little muted, however, as far as comfort goes, the car does not fail to impress.

The latest launch from South Korean car maker, neo Elantra Fluidic sports dual-tone and spacious interiors that is quite appealing to the eyes. Out of all the three models the Elantra Fluidic wins hands down, as it offers better leg room as well as headroom to its passengers owing to its 2,700 mm wheelbase, which is an advantage of 100 mm over that of Corolla Altis.

On the powertrain front, the Elantra Fluidic does experience a little turbo lag when stuck in the wrong gear or in a low rev range, however, the 1.6 L diesel powertrain does not face any glitch when on a move. While, Renault Fluence with its leaner powertrain offers better performance than its previous generation model. Meanwhile, the Chevrolet Cruze is the clear winner in the race with its more powerful 2 litre motor. However, Elantra leads the race in term of mileage with a fuel efficiency of 16 kmpl in rough driving conditions while Fluence has maintained around 14 kmpl and Cruze delivers 13 kmpl.

In terms of handling, Cruze is far behind both the Elantra and the Fluence with the latter boasting of the best-in-class suspension in this segment. At the same time, Elantra is fabulous in the low rev range owing to its soft rear suspension. The face-lifted Cruze though offers a balanced handling with a more powerful powertrain.

It seems that Hyundai Elantra Fluidic is bound to emerge as the leading model in this class with everything from futuristic design, well laid out interiors and the high-end features though the Renault Fluence is close on its heels. Chevrolet Cruze will cater more to the power hungry class of the buyers. Whichever model grabs the spotlight, customers emerge as the ultimate winners with a plethora of models at their disposal to choose from.
