Maserati Quattroporte Review

Summary

Quattroporte is a four-door sports luxury car brought to you by the Italian car manufacturer Maserati. The first model of Maserati Quattroporte was introduced in 1963 and the latest model was launched in 2013 with a gap of six generations. Unmistakably, the eye-catching imposing bonnet and the classic oval grille will take away all your attention and is a feature inspired by the Gran Turismo. The vertical bars, black and convex pay homage to the iconic A6 GCS Berlinetta model. The Maserati Quattroporte is a symbol of power and excellence with the wailing engines that promise a sedan with a little flair for the dramatic. Quattroporte comes in two styles, Quattroporte- S and Quattroporte- GTS (Sports version). There were special models created between 1971 and 1974 which had its prototype displayed in Paris and Geneva. Only two models were made, one sold to Aga Khan and another to the King of Spain.

Exterior

The front light assemblies stand out with the striking modern design, sitting either side of the grille, rendering the car even more captivating. A stylish and functional feature that the light cluster includes is the LED day running lights, which makes the car instantly recognisable in any condition. The car’s flanks merge smoothly with the light cluster’s vertical sweep. Quattroporte’s innate elegance is enhanced with unique aesthetic touches like the twin steel oval tailpipes, which add to the car’s dashing poise and provide muscle to the back end, contrasting with the rectangular look of the LED light clusters. The exterior of Maserati Quattroporte is a new take on traditional styling with a modern touch, like the refined 19” Tritone rims fitted and the triangular C-pillar that supports the oval and iconic ‘Saetta’ logo. The spokes on the special rims are similar to those in the Maserati Tridente portraying sophistication and strength. It has all what it takes to be extraordinary, with the most impressive design and the perfect synthesis of power and luxury.

Interior

Passengers are cocooned in a luxurious interior that allows them to experience the extravagance of the purely smooth drive. The dashboard is dominated by a broad centre section and is set out on three levels which add a renewed sense of lightness and space.  There is a large Maserati Touch Control touch screen in the middle of the dashboard that can be used to manage the car’s many information and entertainment systems. Poltrona Frau® leather finish has been crafted using the finest Italian traditions in Quattroporte and results in an interior that is both hard wearing and comfortable. Starting right from the doors to the centre of the dashboard, the standard finish displays elegant briarwood. This prestigious element is recognized for its veining and knots, featuring open pores, exclusive characteristics, much sought-after. There is plenty of leg space and space for the head in the car and the cosy seats will make the experience on board extremely memorable. It is a five-seater with three seats in the rear and an armrest by the centre. The armrest in the centre features a USB connection to plug in mobile/ audio devices and two storable cup holders. An alternative for this is available, wherein it is possible to request two individual ventilated, electronically adjustable and heated seats that will share a centre console packed with functions, ensuring a drive as relaxing as it originally would be, without any compromise. The ergonomic seats have vertical patterns featuring on the seating area and can be adjusted electronically in terms of height, reach and the seat angles to achieve the perfect driving position.

Engine and Transmission

Maserati Quattroporte is offered with three petrol engine options, namely 4244 cc, 4691 cc and 4691 cc. The first engine churns out a maximum power of 401 bhp, whereas the other two offers 431 bhp and 440 bhp, respectively. It has 6/8-speed automatic gearbox transmission making it beyond powerful and justifying its use as a sports luxury car. With a highest torque of 550 Nm, the car reaches a top speed of 285 km/ hr in sports mode.

Performance and Handling

Performs with power and meets all expectations. There are 5 modes to choose from that can be chosen by pressing the tunnel- mounted buttons, namely Auto Sport, Auto Normal, Manual Sport, Manual Normal, and the all-new I.C.E.

Braking System

Maserati Quattroporte has Brembo brakes that are exclusively designed to guarantee high performance under intensive use and to optimise weight. These dual cast brakes have a six-piston monoblock that acts on 360 x 32 mm discs, mounted on the front with four-piston units and 350 x 28 mm discs at the rear.

Mileage

The 2987 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 17 kmpl in city and 19 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 10 kmpl on urban roads and 12 kmpl and freeways, respectively.

Safety Features

The vehicle is safe, even when your surroundings aren’t. The stability control in the vehicle senses when the handling limits of the vehicle have been exceeded automatically. It then reduces engine power or applies the anti- lock brakes that help prevention of loss of control by the driver. Front, side and overhead airbags enrich the interiors. In case of a collision, the occupant will be placed in the optimal seating posture after the seatbelt pretensions will tighten the seatbelts. It also has anti- whiplash head restraints that act against collision forces and reduce injury. Unwanted vehicle intrusions are also detected by the ignition disable device.

Verdict

The vehicle is best preferred in regions with difficult terrains due to its handling capability. Gear shifts are light and can switch and fight the toughest surroundings. The adaptive auto software delivers precise and light gear shifts after recognition of the driver’s driving style and tweaks the shifting type according to it.

Competition

The main competitors of Maserati Quattroporte are the full-size luxury cars like Audi A8, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, Jaguar XJ and Lexus LS.

Pros

  1. Spacious with sumptuous interior
  2. Extremely Quick

Cons

  1. High running costs
  2. Heavy steering, although smooth
