About Hyundai Tucson [2016-2020]
After the runaway success of the Creta, Hyundai has set its eyes on the lucrative premium SUV segment. The Hyundai Tucson will be positioned above the Creta as the brand Tucson makes a comeback in India after almost a decade. The Tucson was one of the first premium compact SUV from Hyundai in the early 2000s after the full-size Terracan.
In terms of competition, the Tucson ideally competes with the Skoda Yeti and the Honda CR-V in terms of five-seater SUVs but with its price tag, it takes on the Innova Crysta and a whole bunch of entry-level D-segment sedans like the Toyota Corolla Altis, Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Jetta and the Hyundai Elantra.

The Hyundai Tucson does look stylish and it gets its design inspiration from other SUVs from the Korean automaker. There chunky hexagonal grille dipped in chrome is flanked by the swept back headlamps. The sculpted bumper gets a mesh grille, fog-lamps and the LED DRLs. Just like the fascia, the profile of the Tucson is stylish and is inspired by the Santa Fe.
The diamond-cut alloys, peripheral cladding and a sharp shoulder line makes it look premium and butch. Tucson’s rear is stylish and the i20 style tail lamps look beautiful. The tail gate has its share of creases, true to its fluidic roots and with the blacked out lower half of the bumper, it does look nice.
Like all Hyundai’s, the Tucson’s cabin is premium and feature loaded. The quality and fit and finish are nice and the dark theme looks sporty. The dashboard is dominated by the large touchscreen display in the centre console followed by the two-zone climate control unit. The instrument console is the classic binnacle with the MFD in the centre layout that reads all the required information. In terms of features, it gets electrically foldable and retractable wing mirrors, cruise control, puddle lamps, reclining rear seats that split as standard equipment. Automatic headlamps, cruise control, push-button start are also offered across the range.
The cabin is spacious and there is enough room for five in the cabin. The driving seat is height adjustable and while the rear seat reclines, it also splits 60:40 and can be folded to open up more cargo space. The top-spec car gets an electrically operated tailgate and an electronic parking brake.
As for the safety, dual airbags in the front with ABS and EBD is standard across the range. The Automatic transmission cars get ESP while the top-spec variants get side as well as curtain airbags for additional safety.
Engine & Transmission
The Hyundai Tucson is offered with both petrol and diesel engines. The 2.0-litre four cylinder turbo-diesel belts out 182bhp of power and 400Nm of torque and comes mated to six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. The 153bhp, 192Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol also comes with similar six-speed manual and automatic options. The Tucson gets only the front-wheel drive setup as of now but we expect the torque-on demand all-wheel drive Tucson to come in soon.
The 1995 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 15 kmpl in city and 17 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 14 kmpl on urban roads and 16 kmpl on freeways, respectively.
