Hyundai i20 Active Review

Hyundai India, the country’s second largest carmaker, launched its first crossover - the i20 Active - in India on 17th March 2015. The crossover is based on the new-generation i20 aka Elite i20. It looks sportier and more rugged than its hatchback sibling. Features that differentiate both the vehicles are cladding all around the body, new skid plate, projector headlamps with daytime running lamps, new bumper with large fog lamps, stylish cornering lights and bigger alloys. The interior design is very ergonomic, and has a plenty of entertainment and comfort-enhancing features. It gets an all black interior with orange or blue accents and dual-tone upholstery.

The crossover is available in two engine options - a 82bhp, 1.2-litre Kappa petrol and a 88.76bhp, 1.4-litre diesel. Both the engines are coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The crossover is among the most fuel efficiency Hyundai cars in India that delivers a mileage of 19kmpl (petrol) and 23kmpl (diesel). Drivability, especially in city traffic, is impressive. Handling, too, is good, thanks to the high ground clearance and light steering wheel.

Further to this, read Hyundai i20 Active Road Test details by our expert.

The crossover is based on one of the top-selling Hyundai cars in India - the new-gen i20. However, it looks sportier, more masculine and outgoing than its hatchback sibling. At front end, it gets lots of matte grey cladding, new skid plate, projector headlamps with daytime running lamps, a new bumper with large fog lamps and stylish cornering lights. The thick door cladding, silver roof rails and 16-inches alloys enhance its side profile. It features a new skid plate, LED tail lamps and tailgate spoiler at rear end.

The interior is as sporty and premium as its exterior. The all black interior with orange inserts and dual-tone (blue and black) upholstery add more to its sporty appearance. It’s spacious and comfortable, and loaded with plenty of features such as audio system with 1GB storage memory, Bluetooth, USB and Aux-in connectivity, a parking sensor display etc.

Engine & Transmission

The crossover is available in both petrol and diesel fuel option. The petrol version is powered with a 1.2-litre Kappa engine that develops a maximum power of 82bhp at 600rpm with a torque of 115Nm at 4000rpm. The diesel variant derives its power from the 2nd-gen 1.4-litre engine that churns out a maximum power of 88.76bhp, while yielding a torque of 219.7Nm between 1500rpm - 2750rpm. Both the powertrains are mated with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Performance & Handling

The crossover drives and responds more like the i20 hatch. It takes its own time to speed-up, though mid-range performance of diesel engine is quite impressive. Steering is extremely light, but is too lazy for feedback. It rides smooth at moderate speeds, but gets bouncy at high revs. A ground clearance of 190mm further improves its ride quality. Handling is predictable and balanced.

Braking System

Braking performance is flawless. It is equipped with front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. The Anti-lock braking system (ABS) and Electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) further improve its braking capabilities.

The 1396 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 19 kmpl in city and 21 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 15 kmpl on urban roads and 17 kmpl on freeways, respectively.

Safety Features

Just like other Hyundai car models, the i20 crossover comes loaded with several safety features, and ensures a safe drive. Features like side impact protection beams, three-point seat belts, engine immobilizer, headlamps, dual horn and central door locking come as standard. Whereas, dual front airbags, headlamp escort function, smart keyless entry function, automatic headlamps and clutch lock are available with the top variants.

The Hyundai i20 Active is a good value for money car. It’s an ideal pick for the buyers who want a rugged and frugal crossover with premium interior and impressive drivability.

Hyundai i20 Active Vs Fiat Avventura

Hyundai’s new i20 Active appears more rugged and sportier than its hatchback sibling - the new-gen i20. But, the Avventura has a raw and masculine appeal. In terms of interior quality, fuel economy and drivability, the Hyundai’s crossover takes a lead over its rival. However, the Avvetura, with high ground clearance (205mm) and refined engines, delivers better performance and handling.

  • Exterior styling
  • Best-in-class comfort and safety features
  • High ground clearance
  • Agile suspension
  • Handling and city drivability

  • Acceleration could be better
  • Steering isn’t responsive
  • High speed performance

  • Hyundai i20 Active Review

    Aditya Chatterjee | 11th April 2015

Hyundai i20 Active Review “Can you take it further inside the sand?” I screamed to my friend sitting inside. He promptly denied any possibility whatsoever. This is the exact scenario which often keeps repeating when I am shooting a front-wheel drive hatchback turned into a macho looking crossover. Hyundai officials are quick enough to....

The i20 Active is a derivative of the Elite i20 and thus it looks extremely similar to the hatchback. Hyundai has cleverly offered additional features on the Active to make it more appealing and also to attract the younger buyer’s attention. Since it is a Crossover, the essentials of the category like cladding and skid plates are mandatory....
