The Ertiga was Maruti answer to take on the MUV segment. Prior to its launch, it was claimed to take on the Innova, Xylo etc with its passenger carrying capacity. The Ertiga was based on the Swift platform. Keeping the development costs low and increasing the existing space, the Ertiga was made targeting larger families. Ertiga is available in petrol and diesel variants with the CNG version coming soon. The Ertiga is available at a price range of Rs.787587 to Rs.709418

Renault Duster was a compact SUV launched in India by the French car maker. Renault finally got elevation it desired for. The company got in news for re establishing the French manufacturers plan in India. Renault along with compact dimensions also offers an option to choose from in engine units, the mileage friendly 85PS diesel unit and the rev friendly 110PS.

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga does not look good. It looks like a vehicle which is stuck between a hatch and a MPV. It has the same lines of Swift and Ritz. The broad radiator grille and elongated headlight design mark the front face of the car. The long window line extends to the rear quarter panel. In the rear profile, the tail gate opens in an angular fashion. The tail lamp design looks too miniscule in front of the grand tail door.

The Mahindra Quanto is a compact SUV which fits in the sub 4 meter SUV bracket. The smaller dimensions help in cutting the price and availing the tax benefits. The Quanto borrows heavily from elder brother Xylo which is very evident in its styling. The Renault Duster looks like a very well balanced and proportionate SUV, without any extra over hang. The Duster will definitely not just lure the SUV buyers but will also attract a lot of sedan and premium hatch buyers too as the price point in which it is offered is very lucrative.

In the Renault Duster, the beige dual tone interiors of the Renault Duster make it feel very roomy inside. The central console has an integrated music system with Bluetooth and USB plug in option. Touch and feel of the buttons are very nice. The Central Lock/Unlock button takes little time as it is a tiny button situated on the left bottom of the console. The display of the entertainment system has been kept very basic and intentionally so as to have a simple approach for all. There are not too many options crowding it which is good.

Inside the Ertiga, the interiors are done in twin colors. The beige and black interiors try hard to look premium but end up looking tacky. The only place where the Ertiga scores more than the Duster is the availability of 3rd row. However in this 3rd row passenger comfort is negligible.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga comes in petrol as well as diesel options. The petrol version makes use of K-Series Petrol Engine with VVT which has a displacement of 1373cc. It produces a max power of 95PS at 6000 rpm and a torque of 130Nm at 4000 rpm. The diesel unit is a DDiS Diesel Engine which has a displacement of 1248cc. It produces a max power of 90PS at 4000rpm and a torque of 200Nm at 1750 rpm.

The Renault Duster comes in petrol and two diesel engine options; we were driving the 110 PS diesel engine as that was the most appropriate for climbing the hilly terrains of Munnar and its surrounding areas. It has a Common rail direct injection 4 cylinder 1461cc K9K diesel engine. The K9K diesel engine was also seen on the Logan as well as many present day Renault vehicles.

The Ertiga before it launch was building a strong reputation against Innova but then after launch all such tall claims were squished. Toyota Innova is the unbeatable MUV when it comes to passenger space and comfort. Maruti tried hard to lure customers in its favour but failed miserably. Sadly, the company assumed that the Ertiga customer would be attracted by the brand name only ignoring the fact that modern consumers are extremely smart and is aware of the different options available.

The Renault Duster proved its mettle by sailing fantastic numbers. It helped Renault catapult its image. There are also speculations of a 4x4 version coming soon. Renault Duster also will be facing competition from Ford EcoSport once it is launched in India.
