      Cartrade Comparison Test

With Ertiga, Maruti Suzuki opened a new compact Multi-Purpose vehicle segment in the country. It was the first entry-level MPV that attracted several cost-conscious buyers who were looking for a 7-seater family vehicle. The Honda Mobilio later entered the same segment. Though both the Ertiga and Mobilio fall in a different price bracket than the Innova, people interested in buying a family car consider all three.

Here's our brief comparison between the Martuti Suzuki Ertiga and the Toyota Innova.

      Exterior and Interior Design

Based on the new Swift platform, the Ertiga MPV measures 4265mm in length, 1695mm in width and 1685mm in height, and it comes with 2470mm of wheelbase. The vehicle's front grille, big headlamps and long hood resembles the conventional Maruti design, which looks like Ritz's front. The fog lamps are attached in vertical plastic shell, while outside rear view mirrors get integrated blinkers. The flared wheel arches of the top-spec Ertiga have been fitted to alloy wheels shod with 185/65 size tyres.

The Toyota Innova carries the same age old silhouette. The front fascia gets prominent radiator grille with horizontal slats, flanked by large headlamps. Its side profile is simple with effective designs. The flared wheel arches, side skirts and alloy wheels suit the simple design of the MPV. In order to add some premium touch, the company has added chrome on door handles and side beadings. The tail-gate mounted spoiler is conceived. At the back, the MPV looks good with chrome strip running across the length, new tail lamps, etc.

Inside the cabin, the Ertiga shares most of its layout and features with the Swift twins. It has dual-tone dashboard in beige and brown shade, while the seats, carpets, steering wheel and gear knob get beige shade. The top-spec model gets height adjustable seats. The middle row seats has 60:40 seats that can be folded flat to create extra cargo space. Its third row seat lacks legroom and headroom, and is good for kids. With all three rows of seats fully folded, the vehicle offers a luggage space of 1351-litres. There are several cubby holes on offer including bottle holders, cup holders, seat-back pockets, a central armrest with storage space, and medium size glove box.

On the other hand, the Innova MPV is the most spacious car in its league. All three rows get their separate AC vents, and a set of bottle holders. The third row seats offer excellent legroom and headroom, which is more than sufficient to accommodate adults. The third row seats can be folded to increase the cargo space. It is equipped with reverse parking camera, steering mounted controls, captain seats and a 2-DIN touchscreen infotainment system.

      Performance

The Ertiga MPV is available in both petrol and diesel guise. While the petrol version gets a 1.4-litre K-Series unit that is good for 94bhp and 130Nm of peak torque, the oil burner is a 1.3-litre multi-jet unit producing 89bhp of power and 202Nm of torque. On the other hand, the Innova MPV is powered by a 2.5-litre engine that produces 100.60bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. This engine is coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox.
