      Honda Amaze is Honda’s entry in the diesel sedan market. After a long pause and lot of excitement, the Japanese car maker decided to take the plunge. The petrol engine is same as the one in hatch Brio while the company has made an all new i-DTEC diesel engine which claims a mileage of 25.8Kmpl. Amazing mileage, premium interiors and a great ride quality is what Honda is banking on. The Amaze has been priced very smartly and competitively against the Swift DZire. It is available in 6 petrol and 4 diesel variants. It is priced between Rs. 5.35 - Rs. 8.02 lakhs (Ex-Showroom Mumbai)

      The Swift DZire is an extremely popular entry level sedan in the country. It is available in both petrol and diesel variants. The Swift DZire had set a new trend in the entry level sedan market. With a very responsive engine, strong build quality and a well spread dealership; it is a favorite of many consumers. It has 7 variants including an automatic variant. It is priced between Rs. 5.22 - Rs. 7.83 lakhs (Ex-Showroom Mumbai)

      Honda cars have a design that attracts an enthusiast and thus they have never looked boring. The design is minimalistic styled and does not look dated. The Honda Amaze too looks a well proportioned sedan. It has cuts and creases in right quantities at the right places. The design is based on Honda’s Smart Micro Limousine concept which emphasizes on strong present with compact dimensions. Seem from certain angles the Amaze looks like a mini-Honda City. The length of it has been limited to 3990 mm making is a sub 4 metre sedan. Smaller dimensions mean no sweat in finding parking lots.

      The Swift DZire is Front facia now has a sleeker bonnet, which helps in a dynamic look. The height of the new gen model has been reduced. With the swept back headlamps, the overall front profile looks wider. Being compact in overall size, the new Dzire has longer wheelbase.The headlights and the tail-lamps now get clear lens. Headlight stretches to the shoulder line of the side profile. All the three variants come with body colored bumpers; however the body colored door handles is found in the 2 top end variants.

      Similarly, ORVMs fitted on the V and Z-series variants can be electrically internally adjusted, while the standard version has manual adjustment settings. The ORVM with turn indicators embedded on them feature on the V and Z series along with fog lamps

      The interiors of Honda Amaze have been designed with the “man maximum machine minimum” concept which concentrates on allotting more space for occupants by minimizing the space required for mechanical components. This design philosophy also makes the interiors very spacious yet compact at the same time.

      The instrumental panel is identical to the one in Brio which has a 3D combination meter with amber lighting. The digits look very sporty. On the instrumental panel, the central cave is the speedometer which also houses the digital fuel gauge in it. The digital display shows tripmeter, odometer and fuel consumption of the vehicle in addition to the fuel gauge. The left cave features the analog tachometer and it’s a superb sight to see the needle jump up and down during pedal to metal style of driving. The cave type arrangement of the instrumental panel sometimes makes it difficult to see other information apart from speed.

      In the Swift DZire, The top end version comes with silver accents on the steering wheel. The steering gives a very sporty feel to the car. Power Steering is a standard in all the variants. The steering is tilt adjustable too. The top end variant also has steering mounted controls on it.

      The VXi/VDi variants feature power windows for front and rear doors, central door locking with child door locks for rear doors, Keyless entry features. In the ZXi/ZDi additional features like electromagnetic back door opener, rear window defogger, rear wiper+ washer, driver seat height adjuster, and automatic climate control are also available.

      Some of the other commendable ones include high volume glove box, Parcel shelf, folding assistant grip, sun visor, ticket holder on driver side, roof lamp, chrome door handles etc.

      The new Swift Dzire comes with 4 cylinder 1197cc petrol and a 1248cc diesel unit respectively. The Petrol unit peaks a power of 87PS at 6000 rpm, while the diesel unit produces 75PS at 4000 rpm.

      The torque figures for petrol and diesel are 114 Nm at 4000 rpm and 190Nm at 2000 rpm respectively. Both the cars come with a 5-speed transmission. Variants listing remain same as earlier except for a 4-speed automatic version which has been added in the mid level listing. Maruti Suzuki claims fuel efficiency figures of 19.1kmpl for petrol and 23.4 kmpl for diesel. Pacific Blue, Glistening grey, Arctic white, Clear Beige, Bright Red, Midnight Black, Silky silver are the color shades available for the 2012 Swift Dzire.

      The Amaze petrol borrows the Brio’s heart. It has a 16 valve 4 cylinder SOHC i-VTEC engine with a displacement of 1198cc. This engine produces a peak power of 88PS at 6000 rpm and a torque of 109Nm at 4500 rpm. The petrol engine is offered in 5 speed manual as well as 5 speed Automatic transmission options. When it comes to a smooth refined and a performance engine, i-VTEC is one of my strong favorites.

      The reason i-VTEC lists in my favorites is cause of the dual character. We have driven the Brio for more than 1000kms but even after driving the pint looking hatch for so long, the fatigue factor is negligible. In fact, during our Discover to Drive experience, the Brio was at its chirping best.

      So should you the buy the Maruti or try the new Honda? Maruti has been the segment leader for long. It has virtually dominated the lower and budget segment sedans and hatches. The company connects really well with the masses with its vast product portfolio. The Swift DZire sales have been zooming high and it’s a proof of the company’s success in understanding the psyche of its consumers and giving them what they wish for.

      Honda has been a name synonymous with the premium and niche. Lately, with the Brio they have ventured in the entry car market in the country. This is their very first attempt but then in the first attempt itself Honda has catered to the sensitive side of the consumers. Superb mileage, great comfort and a premium brand image lures the Indian consumers easily. So clearly, the Honda Amaze takes it from the DZire with its fresh approach and competitive pricing.
