D-segment cars are known for their premiumness and really capable engines, and that is the reason why they are quite popular among the upper middle class buyers. The segment has some really great cars from different manufacturers, but here’s a comparison between the two most-fun-to-drive vehicles – Chevrolet Cruze and Skoda Octavia.

The current generation Octavia is currently in its third iteration. It comes with an all-new exteriors and interiors, which is based on the Vision D concept. The car largely resembles the 2013 European Skoda Rapid, but it is more powerful and spacious. On the other hand, the Chevrolet Cruze was launched in 2009 in the country to replace the Optra sedan. It has a powerful road presence and comes with spacious and feature loaded interiors. Though the Cruze hasn’t seen any major changes ever since its introduction, it received a mid-life makeover in 2014.

The new generation Skoda Octavia is based on the new MQB platform, which makes it bigger than the Octavia. It comes with spacious interiors, and the boot space measures at 590-litres. It follows the new Vision D design philosophy and features minimalist and understated exterior. Upfront is the redesigned vertically stacked grille that accommodates Skoda badge. It has short overhangs and finely chiselled line that runs across the length to meet the tail lamps. At the rear, the sedan looks identical to the Skoda Rapid and has C-shaped tail lamps. Inside, the sedan comes with fine quality materials. The central console gets piano black finish that adds to its premium touch. The top-end model is equipped with tyre pressure monitoring, front parking sensors, 6 airbags, panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable driver's seat with seat memory and cruise control.

Chevrolet Cruze has always been among the top-selling cars in its league, though its sales started dropping post the launch of new-gen Hyundai Elantra. With bold and racy exteriors, the sedan has managed to attract a lot of buyers. Upfront is a split-grille, muscular bumper, chrome surrounds fog lamps and stylish headlamps, which adds to its sporty character. The side has minimal rear quarter glass and blackened B-pillars. Its shoulder lines move smartly to meet the large clear lens tail lamps. At the rear, the vehicle has the compact boot and sweeping rear windscreen. Interiors of the sedan are refreshing and spacious, and are loaded with lots of features. The beige cabin suits the Indian taste while the fit and finish, and the quality is top-notch.

Engine Specs

The Skoda Octavia sedan is available in three engine options- 2.0-litre TDI diesel 1.8-litre TSI and the 1.4-litre TSI petrol. The oil burner is capable of producing 141bhp of power and 320Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic transmission options are on offer. The entry-level 1.4l TSI unit is good for 138bhp of power and 250Nm of torque coupled to a six-speed manual transmission. The powerful 1.8-litre TSI engine churns out 177bhp and 250Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a seven-speed DSG transmission.

Powering the Cruze sedan is a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine that is capable of producing a top power output of 164bhp and 380Nm of top torque. This engine is paired to a six-speed manual gearbox.

Conclusion

The Chevrolet Cruze is known for offering excellent driveability and handling to its customer. However, the vehicle seriously needs a major styling update. The new-gen Octavia, on the other hand, looks a lot more appealing than its predecessor and is one of the better-looking cars in its league. The 6-Speed DSG transmission equipped diesel version runs effortlessly.
