About Chevrolet Beat
Summary
The Chevrolet Beat, launched in 2009, received its first facelift in 2014 with minor exterior and interior changes. The Beat is one of the most popular Chevrolet cars in India, which is known as the Spark in international markets. The new model looks similar to its predecessor, though, it gets dual port chrome grille, modified bumpers, new headlamps, fog lamps with chrome lined contrasting black surround and few more changes. The interior, too, doesn’t receive any significant updates, except for dashboard with silver inserts, steering mounted audio controls and manually adjustable air conditioning. There is no mechanical update as well. The hatchback is powered with the same 79.3bhp, 1.2-litre petrol and 57.6bhp, 1.0-litre diesel engines, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The diesel engine is quite peppy at low revs. It’s one of the easiest-to-drive and most fuel efficient Chevrolet cars in India.

Exterior
Though the hatchback received minimal exterior updates in 2014, it looks sportier and more outgoing than its predecessor. At the front end, it features dual port chrome grille, modified bumpers, new headlamps and fog lamps with chrome lined contrasting black surround. However, the side profile remains unchanged. The rear profile gets new dual-tone rear bumper with black faux diffuser integrating reflectors and revised tail lamps with red inserts.
Interior
The interior of the hatchback looks similar to the old model. It gets dashboard with silver inserts, steering mounted audio controls and manually adjustable air conditioning, while rest of the interior design and equipment remain unchanged. Just like most Chevrolet car models, the hatchback comes equipped with several comfort-enhancing features such as audio system with Aux-in, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, multiple storage compartments etc.
Engine and Transmission
No mechanical changes have been made to the hatchback. It is available with the same 1.2-litre petrol and 1.0-litre diesel engine options. The 1.2-litre, 1199cc, 16V SMARTECH petrol engine delivers a maximum power of 79.3bhp at 6200rpm with 108Nm of torque at 4400rpm. The diesel trims are propelled by a 1.0-litre, 936cc, 12V SMARTECH diesel engine, which is good for 57.6bhp and 150Nm. Both the engines are linked to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Performance and Handling
Despite having small size engines, the hatch delivers punchy performance. It’s one of the most fun-to-drive city Ford car models in India. Compact dimensions and short turning radius make it a perfect urban car. Handling is predictable, and the ride quality is good. It accelerates 0-100kmph in 15.5 seconds with a top speed of 145kmph.
Braking System
The front disc brakes and rear drum brakes are well calibrated. The effective ABS (anti-lock braking system) and a good pedal bite further enhance its braking capabilities.
Mileage
The 936 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 23 kmpl in city and 25 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 17 kmpl on urban roads and 19 kmpl on freeways, respectively.
Safety Features
The hatchback is equipped with several passive and active safety features such as day & night inside rear view mirror, front fog lamp, central locking, driver seat belt reminder and height adjust front headrest. While dual airbags, ABS (anti-lock braking system) and front seat belt load limiter are available only on top-end model.
Verdict
The Beat facelift is a good value for money car. However, it received minimal exterior and interior updates. It’s one of the most frugal and fun-to-drive Chevrolet cars in India.

Chevrolet Beat Facelift Review
The definition of a hatchback some years ago was a small car which satisfied basic requirements of driving. Such cars scored low on design and performance making Indian consumers compromise on their wish list from a hatchback.
Many justified these compromises with low pricing. It was the Chevrolet Beat which brought in a new trend in small cars. With its sporty funky looks and a motorcycle inspired instrumental cluster, the Beat brought in a fresh wave in the otherwise boring category.
Being one of the most fuel efficient diesel hatchbacks at 25.44 kmpl, Beat has got a facelift to take on the battle of hatches with a new spirit. We take a quick look and find more on it.
Appearance Exterior
Sporty is the right way to describe the Chevy Beat. It was a fresh looking car at the time of its inception. Among the entire Chevy’s portfolio, it is only the Beat and Cruze which look interesting while the latter scores a lot more for its muscular design. In the new Beat, the design has been tweaked with minor updates but unfortunately they don’t stick out and appear new.
Headlights get detailing in the reflectors and promise to have better illumination. It is the grille which has been changed and it now features the famous Chevy bow-tie design. The twin partitioned radiator grille which gets a chrome surround as well occupies a generous area on the front face. The plane jane fog lamp housing have been replaced by a newly designed black housing with subtle chrome accents.
The side profile remains intact with the same alloy wheels and the unique pillar positioned rear door handle. It aims to give the Beat a two door car look and to some extent it works. It has flares running on arches with certain lines running along its length but then it does not sufficiently occupy enough area to make the design look attractive.
There is jewel finishing on tail lamps now. The rear bumper gets minor updates in the form of revised lines for the plastic cladding. The reflectors have been re positioned. Overall, the new changes in the Beat are too subtle to be noticed and it does not create any excitement.
Appearance Interior
You cannot ignore the motorcycle cluster inspired instrumental panel which is the only modern funk present inside the cabin. The central console looks neat with a simple layout of buttons and knobs. They are not exactly upmarket and the poor finishing is visible in certain areas.
The wavy front dashboard is attractive but when it comes to blocking space, it does that too. I am 6’1 and my left knee kept rubbing against the panel cause of its oddly flowing lines. It is the weirdly designed storage area flowing along the length of the dashboard that eats on knee room of front passengers. The legs can still manage to get some room to breathe as remains the case for rear passengers.
Seats are decently cushioned for a city drive. They are not at their best when it comes to highway driving. They lack sufficient support and cushioning. The under thigh support for both row seats is on the lower side. Front doors have a vertical bottle holder while the rear door doesn’t have any. The storage area is reasonable but the loading area is not convenient.
Performance Drive
Beat retains its three cylinder 936cc diesel engine which featured on the earlier version. To begin with, it is not a quiet little diesel engine and the fact that it is a 3 pot, the rattling of the unit is evident at lower engine speeds. The motor doesn’t feel rev friendly and has a lazy response.
It produces a power of 58.5 PS at 4000 rpm and a torque of 150Nm at 1750 rpm. The engine does not feel responsive in stop go traffic. Till the 2000rpm mark, the car feels very sluggish. But as soon as it gets an open stretch and the digital tachometer crosses 2200rpm, the engine shows some level of enthusiasm. With a performance like this, the Beat Diesel is clearly not for the city traffic but for the highways. Quick and short gear shifts come in handy in city and also shadow the bland engine response.
Agreed, the motor does not feel enthusiastic but then if you are travelling at a stable speed and ignore quick overtaking then the Beat diesel does a decent job. Ride and handling continue to remain impressive and even on broken roads; the suspensions do a great job. The area where it needs improvement other than making the car feel more engaging is cabin insulation. One can feel and hear each and every type of noise which includes the diesel engine revving or the suspensions going through a hard patch. Compare it with the Grandi10 and the difference is evident.
On the positive side, the cute lil Chevy can take almost any by-lane inside the city cause of its amazing manoeuvrability. The only way you can get the best out of the engine is to keep it high on revs and there is enough torque to play with but the moment the engine speed drops, it gets bland. We got a best combined mileage of 18.5 Kmpl.

Dear Sir, I am an owner of Chevrolet Beat Diesel which was purchased during May 2012 and has run around 43000 Kms. and I am also a customer of your extended warranty facility. I am a serving armed forces personnel and during my leave period during September 16 My car was showing glowing EPS amber light and my steering had lost power. On further Inspection i found my car had low Engine Oil also. The vehicle was taken to Deedi Motors kollam for the said fault rectifcatioins under extneded warranty scheme and was under service from 15 Sep 16 to 23 Sep 16. The fault identified by the Service representative of DEEDI motors was a faulty power box of the steering and had told me that the rectification and service will be done only after representatives from GM Eranakulam arrrives. The had replaced the oil and filters and said that oil level will also be checked after their arrival. I had come on leave for the check up of my pregnant wife but had to hire taxi during the whole waiting period which was created by your service protocols which created a delay in delivery of my vehicle. During the period from 15 Sep 16 to 23 Sep 16 the service engineers from Eranakulam General Motors told that my vehicle donot need a power box replacement and I was told that the Vehicle had been rectified. Now again I am on leave as its nearing to my wife's due date but my Vehicle ditch me again. My vehicles exhaust started to exit heavy smoke and the service amber light got lit. My vehicle is in Deedi Service center since 29 Mar 16 and on 31 Mar 16 I had a call from Deedi Motors as if I have to pay Rs 20000/- for the repair of my Car as it needs Engine overhauling and Turbo Replacement as the total cost of Repair is Rs 70000/- under extended warranty Scheme. I had visited Deedi Service Center for the details of repair and the reason for me paying Rs 20000/-. I had also asked for The full Service History of my Vehicle which was not provided. I was shocked on hearing that my well maintained vehicle needs Engine overhauling. Now again today I got Another Call stating that General Motors has rejected my Extended Warranty citing that in in my previous visit I did not wait for the Rectification of low engine Oil i.e from 15 Sep 16 to 23 Sep 16 and seems I didnt wait. Now what i am not able to understand is me being a customer I identifiy a problem and takes the vehicle for rectification and my vehicle was kept in service centre for around 9 days and creates all sorts of trouble during my leave and now say that i didnt give time. I request please forward the details of my vehicles faults and till date service history with reasons for rejection of my paid extended warranty.

What Can ImproveGround Clearance
I bought this Car (Beat LS-Petrol-Grey) in May 2014 and have clocked around 1000+ km without facing any trouble. The Chevrolet dealer, in Hyderabad Orange Auto has provided good support. My Maximum usage is mostly in the Horrible Hyderabad city traffic only. The Car responds very well in the Bumper to Bumper traffic. Myself and my family enjoying every moment while driving this car. I can say this is one of the best car in this segment for a Small family. I love the way people watch my stylish Beat. I feel very proud. I am completely satisfied and there's no need to worry about buying it. I thank Chevrolet for this 5L vehicle that covers most of the features.
