The fans of Volkswagen Camper Van have something to cheer about. Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser, Head of Powertrain Development of Volkswagen AG, has said that the company has started working on a Camper concept van. This van will be powered by an electric motor and is expected to boost the sales of the German manufacturer once launched.

He said at the New York Auto Show that the original van had assumed a cult status and had an iconic impact. The design cues of the car will have to possess those aspects to keep the heritage of the car intact. Three important things that would be carry-forwarded were hinted by Heinz. He said, "First the wide, solid, D-Pillar; second, the boxy design of the centre section and; thirdly, the front end must have a very short overhang. The distance from the A-pillar to the front end must be very short."

Heinz said that the unique front-end design has to be achieved and it has been decided by the team’s engineers to use an electric motor for that purpose. With the electric motor, the van will be able to take up much lower bonnet line when compared to a conventional engine. As a result, the A-pillar will be able to move up further than a general MPV. The concept car will soon be transformed into a production car, Heinz said.
