It is no secret that home grown auto giant, Mahindra & Mahindra is developing a new compact SUV under the codename S101. The EcoSport rivalling vehicle has been caught on lens on various occasions across the country and it seems that the petite upcoming offering from M&M has borrowed design cues from XUV 500. Yet in development stage, S101 compact SUV is likely to go on sale in India by next year. Underpinning the new monocoque platform, S101 will be a sub-four meter SUV. Mahindra is expected to spin off this sub-four meter SUV in both petrol and diesel engine options. Sources close to the development reveal that a low displacement, 1.2 litre, three pot, petrol engine cold power the petrol range, while the diesel trims could get a 1.5 litre, three cylinder mCR100 engine. This would further help M&M to restrict the price of S101 under affordable range as vehicles with sub-four meter length powered by engines under 1.5 litre capacity attract low excise duty in India. Speculations are rife that Mahindra could price S101 between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh.

The company’s earlier attempt at compact SUV in the form of Quanto failed miserably since the vehicle could not garner sales in domestic market up to Mahindra’s expectations. With S101, M&M eyes to capture the entry level SUV segment that is currently primarily being ruled by EcoSport. Sales of M&M have also been dimming since last few months, while the auto maker will bring S101 next year, Scorpio’s facelift and new generation Bolero being developed under codename U301 will come by year end.
