General Motors is riding high on the wave of booming Indian auto market. Its model Chevrolet Spark constitutes its major sales in the Indian market with Chevrolet Beat and Cruze at close heels to make up volume sales of the company. The company is now planning to introduce Chevrolet Sail in the Indian market and has already launched the sedan variant in China. It is still unclear whether GM India will bring the model to the Indian market as a hatchback or a sedan variant.

“SAIC, our 50% joint venture partner in India, is very advanced on such low-cost manufacturing and we will use its expertise (in developing the 2 lakh rupee car). A lot of money is wasted in duties and logistics if one were to import components from China. Our endeavor is to use low cost supply base in India,” said Karl Slym, President and MD, GM India.

It is also speculated that General Motors may introduce an electric variant of Chevy Sail in the Indian market, though it has snapped its ties with Reva Electric to produce an electric variant for India after M&M acquired stake in Reva.
