We had reported earlier that following the launch of A3 compact premium sedan in India, the German luxury auto maker, Audi is mulling over the launch of A3 Cabriolet in domestic market. Sources close to development have now informed that along with the cabriolet version of A3, Audi is also thinking on the lines of bringing in A3 Sportback hatchback in India. With the launch of A3 Sportback, the company will foray into the hatchback segment in India. This segment has a great potential which otherwise has few options currently, hence it is the perfect time for the auto maker to bring in its offering at this time as it will get the advantage of less competition. The launch of Cabriolet and hatchback versions of A3 will be slated at a close gap and is expected to take place within next 12 months.

The A3 Sportback makes more sense for the Indian market as it will be a more viable option for buyers opting for compact premium cars. Moreover, it has been observed that the first time luxury car buyers usually opt for competitively priced compact cars. In India, the A3 Sportback will face off with Mercedes A Class and BMW 1 Series. Launched last year in India, Mercedes’ A Class hatchback has been received very well by the customers in India. Data shows that sales of A Class hatchback accounted for a sizeable chunk of overall sales of Mercedes Benz.

However, it is yet not clear whether Audi will bring A3 Sportback hatchback in India as a completely built unit or a completely knocked down unit. Its sedan version A3 is likely to be launched in India in the month of August. Expected to be priced between Rs 23 lakh to Rs 25 lakh, A3 will be a frugal offering for luxury enthusiasts. From this we expect the hatchback version of A3 to be priced a tad lower than its sedan version; however it will depend on whether the vehicle will be brought to India through CBU or CKD route that is yet not clear. More details will be unravelled in upcoming months as the launch nears.
