With the increasing concern among consumers and government about car safety features and technologies, automakers are concentrating on incorporating advanced safety features and improving crash-rating of their vehicles. However, the major emphasis is on the accidents and injuries preventing technologies that constantly evaluate driver’s seating position and road obstacles and conditions.
Pre-collision technology is a highly sophisticated automobile safety system that reduces serious injuries during accidents. It is also known as collision avoidance system, collision mitigating system, forward collision warning system and pre-crash system. It’s a highly complex automobile technology in cars that combines active and passive safety features to assist driver and avoid crashes.
How pre-collision systems (PCS) work?
Most modern PCS units work on a radar system. The radar system emits invisible radio waves that move faster than sound. The pre-crash systems include small radar detectors, placed within the grille or up near the front of the vehicle, that consistently release high frequency radar waves. These waves smack off the nearest obstacles or objects and bounce back to the sensors. The sensors evaluate the distance and time travelled by the signals. Subsequently, the PCS unit, on the basis of the gathered information, immediately determines the car’s position, speed, distance and relative velocity, if there is potential accident threat or situation. It also warns the driver about a potential crash or accident.
Types of pre-crash systems
Some pre-crash systems warn or notify driver with an alarm sound when a collision is about to happen. Such warning system enables the driver to take an apt and prompt action. Other systems control certain functions of the car such as the pre-collision braking system. In order to assist the driver, the system exerts additional pressure on the brakes and slows down the car with immediate effect. It reduces risk of potential damage caused by a collision or accident. Systems like seatbelt pretensioners connect the PCS unit with a pre-crash seat belt system, which automatically tenses occupant’s seat belts before a collision or crash.
Pre-collision braking systems and seatbelt pretensioners need to be highly accurate and finely tuned, as a minor malfunction might cause an accident. Car manufacturers are working on to further improve this automobile technology in cars to enhance safety levels.
