Electric vehicles may be emission free, but it doesn’t mean that they are devoid of other requirements. One of the basic requirement f or electric vehicles is that of recharging. You need to be regular about plugging them in before going to bed every day. BMW realized this problem and brought up a simple solution to this problem – the wireless inductive charger technology. So now, you need not pull in any cables or heavy wires, all you need to do is park your car on an inductive platform and press a button. The German car maker sees the inductive charging technology as future of electric cars across the world. For now, it is only the all electric i3 and the i8 plug-in hybrid that feature one of the fastest recharging systems via the BMW I Wallbox. The legendary car maker now wishes to take this journey a step further and introduce inductive charging platform with the cars.
How does wireless charging works? For now, the inductive charging systems have only been developed with compatibility for BMW i car batteries. The wireless charging system consists of 2 major parts – a primary basic coil that is located on the base plate over the garage’s floor and a secondary coil which instilled on a car’s floor. Both these coils are arranged in a circular manner which means they are compact and light in weight. Also, it keeps their magnetic field confined to very small area ensuring safety around these coils. The primary coil transmits power to the senior coil via an alternating magnetic field at a rate of 3.6kW. This charge is enough to charge high-voltage batteries up to their full strength.
The company has also entered in association with the Daimler for developing standard inductive chargers that will make the electric cars a part of mainstream. Also known as the wireless charging technology, it is very user-friendly and eliminates need for any kind of connectors. This features gives its cars a crucial edge over all other vehicles in this segment.
